Ensemble Molière, directed by Satoko Doi-Luck, perform beautiful and rarely heard works from 17th and 18th century France on their luscious combination of wind, string and keyboard instruments. Programme includes music by Francois Couperin, Jean-Baptiste Quentin and Michel Corrette.

Flauguissimo - Swedish lutenist Johan Löfving and Taiwanese flautist Yu-Wei Hu - combine with English/Malaysian duo Incantati to present music from North Germany, Scandinavia and the Baltic coast. Programme includes music by G.F. Telemann, J.S. Bach, Dieterich Buxtehude and Johan Helmich Roman.

Mozart and the Great Balloon Debate

High culture classical music meets TV game show elimination contest!
Three highly articulate classical music singers, all with the surname Gilchrist, represent characters from Mozart's operas: The Magic Flute, Cosi Fan Tutte and The Marriage of Figaro.
Each singer advocates for his chosen character to remain in the balloon. Directed by show host Thomas Guthrie.
You, the audience, get to vote!
Music from the operas, in chamber arrangements by Mozart's Viennese contemporaries, is performed by Trio Notturno (Eva Caballero - flute, Rachel Stott - viola, Jamie Akers - guitar) with violinist Flora Curzon.

Mystery at Twilight

The first of two concerts to celebrate Candlemas.
Julia Bishop, baroque violin, and Toby Carr, theorbo, present a twilight recital of 17th century music. The programme contrasts evocative solo pieces from the bowed and plucked stringed instruments, and the two musicians join to perform Heinrich Ignaz von Biber's Mystery Sonata No.4, 'The Presentation in the Temple'. This event is celebrated at the Feast of Candlemas, 40 days after the birth of Jesus.
This recital, scheduled for the Friday evening following the Feast of Candlemas, precedes our 8 pm concert, "More Splendid than the Sun" (see details below). A combi-ticket for both concerts is available.

Bruegel Consort
The second of two concerts to celebrate Candlemas.
The Bruegel Consort, a vocal ensemble specialising in sixteenth-century sacred polyphony, presents music celebrating the feast of Candlemas in the candlelit Old Church.
More Splendid Than the Sun highlights the joys and miracles of the Virgin Mary’s life. Providing the centrepiece of this programme is a luminous six-voice Mass by Nicholas Ludford (c.1485-1557). The Mass is based on the plainsong Videte miraculum ('behold the miracle of the mother of the Lord') for the feast day of Candlemas, the occasion when Mary presents Jesus in the temple forty days after his birth.
This concert is thematically linked to the earlier 5 pm recital "Mystery at Twilight" (see details above). A combi-ticket for both concerts is available.

Theatrical and dance music brought to life through the rich sonorities of the 17th century string consort.
Professor Peter Holman MBE directs the John Jenkins Consort in a programme of music featuring the music of Matthew Locke (1621 - 1677).
Following our anniversary concerts for Orlando Gibbons in 2025 and John Dowland in 2026, SNEMF commemorates the 350th anniverary of Matthew Locke's death in 2027. The programme includes earlier composers who influenced him, including William Lawes, Robert Johnson and John Jenkins, and celebrates his legacy in the music of Henry Purcell.
